especially after hearing ppl cry about, for example, how kaidan’s character RUINED when he became a love interest for male shepards, and when pressed on the issue their homophobia was exposed

CONFESSION: I’ve always elected to kill Loghain. I understand what he was trying to do, but that still isn’t an excuse for retreating from the battle and killing all of the Grey Wardens. Alistair’s reaction to him being spared is perfectly justified. The man made a rash, cruel decision, and branding all the Grey Wardens as traitors amidst all the other stunts he pulled by the time the game ended was just evil.

I think you’re forgetting something tho

He retreated from battle because it was a fucking mistake to begin with, even Duncan was questioning Cailan. Loghain even suggested Cailan not be on the front lines, but King Blondie was obsessed about glory. Yes, a lot of what Loghain did was pretty dishonorable, and I think he even realizes it. BUT, war isn’t pretty. Loghain chose the threat of Orlesians over the threat of the Darkspawn, which might have been a mistake — but to call Loghain outright EVIL? It’s a disservice to the character.

Actually I take absolute exception to “oppression of thin people doesn’t exist”. There’s no need to act like there are not unique societal issues that plague and actively hurt thin people. That does nothing to solve the issue of body positivity and grossly ignores a lot of health and mental well-being concerns.

It is patently not the same as that of fat people, but don’t pretend that body types on the so-called other end of the acceptable spectrum of size don’t receive a unique set of oppressing factors.

Thank you OYD! As the mom of a VERY thin daughter, I appreciate your comments more than you know. She has been questioned by her teachers, counselors and I have been questioned by her teachers and school nurse as to whether she is FED at home (one school stopped shot of sending CYS to my house, after being told her DAD doesn’t gain weight either, he’s 5’7 and 140), she’s had teachers WATCH her eat just to make sure she ate her lunch. She’d has gossip come back to her that she’s anorexic, been told to “eat a sandwich” or “you’re too skinny” and numerous other things pertaining to her body size. Maybe none of that is oppression, but it’s harmful none the less. And her sister is the opposite, she has to struggle to keep from gaining too much (wanting to join the army, has to meet requirements) because her genetics say so. Just like my oldest who’s genes stop her from gaining.

One of my friends in middle school developed Crohn’s disease and it took her FOREVER to get a diagnosis because the doctors kept telling her that she had an eating disorder and it was her mother’s fault because her mother was thin and they did a lot of hiking.

When doctors ignore your legitimate concerns because of your body size/shape, that is oppression.

I had a hard time convincing a doctor when I was in college that I needed help because I was very very thin. Apparently I looked good, and everyone kept praising me for it. I was actively hurting myself and crying out for help, and all I got was a lot of “you watch what you eat, that’s not an illness”. I was far too thin for the frame and build of my body.

I mean, it’s worse, and more difficult, as a fat woman with ED to get a doctor to pay attention, almost for the same reasons. In addition to that, it took forever for them to dx my fibro because one doctor after another said that it was because I was gaining weight. Only the pain started when I was very, very, very thin right after boot camp. I lost a dangerous amount of weight in boot camp in the ten weeks I was there. Normally that would be considered anorexia and/or bulimia, but I had just had a baby so they figured I needed to lose it anyhow.

Medical oppression happens on both ends of the weight spectrum. The problem is our obsession with food as a moral thing instead of a needed thing. We act like food is a reward for some reason and attach good and evil significance to it.

Yes, thin people are regarded as more desirable/acceptable/have more jobs open to them because of this, but this is one of those backhanded oppressions (kind of like chivalry). You’re praised for your self-control or your attention to your health or wtf-ever the latest excuse is, so any glaring problems you have get swept away under that.

And that is before we begin diving into the mental illness side of all of that.

As someone who has been overly thin for many, many years due to both physical and mental problems, I can attest to a lot of this. Yes, I do have people who praise my ability to keep my weight down, but I can assure everyone that I wouldn’t actively choose to be this thin if I could. I have health issues that keep me from properly digesting and it is very painful, and over the years I have developed anxiety around food and eating because I’m afraid of the pain that it eventually causes me. Yet this thing, this anxiety I have, this obsession of mine, is nothing I need to worry about because it HAPPENS to make me thin in the process?

Doctors took notice of my low weight, yet it’s taken them over ten years to finally tackle issues that might be causing my problems. At first, it was merely an issue of me not eating (“go eat a sandwich”). It only took me years of me telling them that I was hurting badly that they thought to look into my gallbladder being the culprit. In the meantime, I’ve been bullied excessively (yes, overly thin people ARE bullied), called all sorts of things including anorexic, bulimic, had rumors of me having AIDS going around (yeah don’t even ask about that, I don’t even know how it got that far). People who tell me that they wish they had my problem (trust me, NO YOU DON’T, I’ve spent hours on the toilet sick and I know no human being could ever want this problem I have). Family members look at me in concern and try to fill my plate full of food I don’t want to eat, tell me I look ill which just ramps up the anxiety I feel about it all.

I’m not healthy. I don’t like the way I look. I didn’t choose this. I can’t even begin to speak for others who suffer more than I do (Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, gluten allergy, etc). It’s not the same oppression that overweight people suffer by far, and I know this, but never say that thin people can’t suffer oppression. It’s society’s perception of weight and image that is the root of the entire problem: chastise the overweight, overlook and dismiss the issues of the overly thin.

Awww the XS is my favorite! It reminds me of the Ebon Hawk and therefore the Millennium Falcon. <3 I think that’s also why I like the Mantis too, it reminds me of the Slave I.

The Phantom just doesn’t seem to fit Star Wars IMO. A little too… clean? Smooth? Made by Apple?

It was designed to appear like a luxury ship — so overt that it’s covert. There’s a reason why it doesn’t look like the others.

Take a look at some of the yachts/luxury ships that are canon in Star Wars.

There aren’t enough words to express how much I enjoy this book. I’m a fan of Young Adult novels in general, but urban fantasy isn’t always my favourite genre. Dark Star manages to stay grounded in realism while dealing with its fantastical and supernatural elements, and that is entirely on the strength of the heroine’s voice. Audrey doesn’t just read like a real teenage girl, she feels like one too. Her thoughts don’t seem scripted just to get the plot somewhere; they actually come across as what a reasonable human being would think and feel when being faced with the fantastic and the horrible. It is such a treat to read a book with a teenage protagonist who allowed me to reflect on my own teenage years and think “Yes, this makes sense” instead of sitting there wondering if I’d really lost that much touch with who I was a decade ago. There’s no dumbing down, there’s no plot device inner monologues, Audrey is Audrey and I was riveted by her story.

A strongly written and likable heroine isn’t enough, though. Dark Star has virtues I could espouse for days but for the sake of brevity I will generalize. The relationship between Audrey and her mother Lucy is just as believable as Audrey’s characterization. There’s no exaggerated teenager/parent conflict but, and much more important in my mind, there also isn’t a false sense of their friendship. Just because Lucy respects her daughter and they have a good relationship doesn’t mean she isn’t, above all, her parent. The family dynamic at play between them is beautifully developed and real and something I wish I’d seen more in media when I was growing up.

Continuing the theme of strong characters and their interactions, Audrey’s relationship with her two best friends is just as well-written. You get a sense of why these people are friends, what draws them to each other and why, even if they don’t always agree, they feel as strongly for each other as they do. Perhaps it’s due to the strength of Audrey’s voice in the narration, but I never found myself wondering why she did or did not confide in her friends.

Then there’s Leon.

These days it feels like the love interest in YA Urban Fantasy always follows the same model: Mysterious, older, angsty… Leon’s older and Leon’s not without angst and mystery, but in a shockingly revolutionary twist for the genre: He’s also a well adjusted human being with thoughts and feelings and actions outside of his relationship with Audrey. Romances are often my favourite parts of books so I’m endeavoring not to say too much here lest I spoil, but… trust me: their relationship develops beautifully and doesn’t present a problematically one-sided or obsessive note that makes me wonder if it’s really appropriate for the YA audience.

All in all, Dark Star is one of the best examples of the Young Adult Urban Fantasy genre that I have ever read. The characters are strong and nuanced; the plot has the right amount of suspense, action, romance, humor, and most of all: heart. I laughed, I cried, I couldn’t put it down without knowing what happened next. Dark Star delivers in every way and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Frenette’s website tells us that the sequel (Burn Bright) is set for a February release and I can’t think of another book I anticipate more. I know it will be worth the wait, and in the mean time I hope more people are exposed to just how good Dark Star is. In every way.
